Prehistoric GPS Helped Ancient Brits « Result #1 on Jan 5, 2010, 4:50pm »
How a prehistoric sat nav stopped our ancestors getting lost in Britain By Daily Mail Reporter 05th January 2010
Ancient man had his own form of 'sat nav' that helped him find his way across Britain, according to new research.
The sophisticated geometric system was based on a stone circle markers.
Our ancestors were able to travel between settlements with pinpoint accuracy thanks to a complex network of hilltop monuments.
These covered much of southern England and Wales and included now famous landmarks such as Stonehenge and The Mount.
Researcher Tom Brooks analysed 1,500 prehistoric monuments, including Stonehenge and Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, and found them all to be on a grid of isosceles triangles - those with two sides of equal length - each pointing to the next site.
He believes this proves there were keen mathematicians among the ancient Britons 5,000-6,000 years ago, at least two millennia before the Greeks who were supposed to have discovered geometry. Many monuments are 250 miles or more away but GPS co-ordinates now show all are accurate to within 100 metres and provided a simple map for ancient Britons to follow.
Incredibly, the triangles still exist today as many medieval churches, abbeys and cathedrals were constructed on top of the original stone circle markers.
Historian and writer Tom Brooks, from Honiton, Devon, believes prehistoric men were 'highly intelligent surveyors and planners.' He said: 'It is known that many, if not all, early churches, abbeys and cathedrals were constructed on ancient sites and this diagram illustrates that point.
'This ancient form of geometry permits the production of various patterns across our landscape linking prehistoric settlements and waymarks.
'Such is the mathematical precision that it is inconceivable that this work could have been carried out by the primitive indigenous culture we have always associated with such structures.
'Such patterns could only have been the work of highly intelligent surveyors and planners which throws into question all previous claims as to the origin of mathematics.
'All this suggests a culture existing in these islands in the past quite outside our expectation and experience today.'
Mr Brooks analysed 1,500 sites stretching from Norfolk to north Wales. These included standing stones, hilltop forts, stone circles and hill camps.
Each was built within eyeshot of the next. Using GPS co-ordinates, he plotted a course between the monuments and noted their positions to each other.
He found that they all lie on a vast geometric grid made up of isosceles 'triangles'.
Each triangle has two sides of the same length and 'point' to the next settlement. Thus, anyone standing on the site of Stonehenge in Wiltshire could have navigated their way to Lanyon Quoit in Cornwall without a map.
Mr Brooks believes many of the Stone Age sites were created 5,000 years ago by an expanding population recovering from the trauma of the Ice Age.
Lower ground and valleys would have been reduced to bog and marshes, and people would have naturally sought higher ground to settle.
He said: 'The modern-day diagram links 13 churches within four counties of south-west England, ranges across 60 miles, and is a remarkably accurate arrangement of isosceles triangles projecting to varying compass points.
'The medieval system reaches from Derbyshire to Cambridgeshire, Sussex, Hampshire, Somerset and Wales, using only isosceles triangles accurate to within 100m over distances up to 250 miles.'

Bill Missett is a genius on creating introspection within his readers. My only problem has been hanging on to copies of his books. Every time I buy one, I loan it to a friend. It ends up passed down to people who appreciate it, and it is almost impossible to get back. Each person that reads his work wants to gift it to another friend. All are a 'must read'. He changed my life without changing my beliefs. I look forward to reading his next work.

Comic: The Varginha Case / L'affaire Varginha
Frenchman Philippe Auger created a 166-page comic strip devoted to the famous Varginha alien entity case.
Synopsis Varginha, a small Brazilian city, January 20, 1996: 15:30. Three young girls returning from their work are frozen. In front of them stands a strange creature. The creature has a big head, his body covered with greasy scales and large red almond-shaped eyes. In testimony one after another: witnesses claim to have seen the army catch "Little Monsters", a policeman died mysteriously, a surgeon was ordered to examine one of those things ... Philippe Auger returns with the Varginha case of the "Brazilian Roswell", one of the most striking phenomena of modern ufology. A comic where fiction meets real life.

Lost city of Atlantis discovered? Grainy images show city-like formations at the bottom of the Caribbean By Mail Foreign Service
A group of 'undersea archaeologists' have become the latest to claim they have uncovered the lost city of Atlantis. The scientists - who have refused to identify themselves - have released a series of images taken beneath the Caribbean. They insist the snaps show what appear to be the ruins of a city that could pre-date Egypt's pyramids, which appeared after 2600BC.
They even told a French newspaper that one of the structures appears to be a pyramid. Now the anonymous group wants to raise funds to explore the secret location where the images were taken. They would not reveal the exact location, however, saying only that it was somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. The claims have raised eyebrows on the internet, though sceptics refrained from debunking them entirely - just in case.
The legend of Atlantis, a city of astonishing wealth, knowledge and power that sank beneath the ocean waves, has fascinated millions. Time and time again hopes have been raised that the lost city has been found - only for those hopes to be dashed against the evidence (or lack thereof). Its location - or at least the source of the legend - remained a tantalising mystery. In 1997, Russian scientists claimed to have found Atlantis 100 miles off Land's End.
In 2000 a ruined town was found under 300ft of water off the north coast of Turkey in the Black Sea.
The area is thought to have been swamped by a great flood around 5000BC, possibly the floods referred to in the Old Testament.
In 2004 an American architect used sonar to reveal man-made walls a mile deep in the Mediterranean between Cyprus and Syria.
In 2007 Swedish researchers claimed the city lay on the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, which was submerged in the Bronze Age.
And as recently as February of this year, what appeared to be grid-like lines that resembled city streets were spotted on Google Earth - in the ocean off the coast of Africa. Sadly Google itself quickly debunked the suggestion, explaining that the lines were left by a boat as it collected data for the application. 'Bathymetric (sea-floor) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea-floor,' a spokesman said.
'The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.'

'Dragon in the Sky: Prophecy From the Stars': New Book Examines UFO Activity, Government's Role in Covering it Up
SEDONA, Ariz., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In her fascinating new book, "Dragon in the Sky: Prophecy From The Stars" (published by AuthorHouse), Ann Eller recounts her astonishing experiences with alien visitors and the messages she received from them in the hopes that, by sharing her story, she can appeal to readers to champion for full UFO disclosure from the U.S. government.
Eller has previously worked with noted astronomer and pioneer in the field of UFO and alien research, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, and now weaves her personal experiences with a broader discussion of alien activity. She candidly describes an intensely vivid experience of extraterrestrial contact and how it changed her life, writing:
I could feel the pulse of infinite energy. The pink light burned hot to a brilliant white. An intense heat filled my body and I got the sense of someone jamming a steel rod down the back of my head, down my spine, and out my tailbone. I felt pain, the white light, the fierce energy of it all, vibrating like an emotional sensation through my whole being.
The energy coursed from the top of my head, down my spine, completely through me and out my left leg. I began to cramp, and willed myself to breathe through the pain. I said to myself, "It's OK, you can stand it, you can stand it, whatever it is, it's good, it's happening to you, it's all good..."This alien contact experience left Eller with a message to share with the world. "Dragon in the Sky: Prophecy From The Stars" challenges assumptions, warns of impeding events and stresses the need for a dramatic improvement in relationships with each other and a higher power. Find out more in this provocative new book.
Praise for "Dragon in the Sky: Prophecy From The Stars":

The Truth Behind the 2012 Prophecy
The coming end of the Mayan calendar cycle prompts apocalypse fears
On December 21, 2012, the 5,125 year cycle of the Mayan calendar will end. The ancient civilization, which reached its peak in the Yucatan and Central America a thousand years ago, predicted the date would be marked with a rare cosmic phenomenon. Some people speculate it will coincide with the destruction of the earth, others hope it will transform the world in more positive ways. But few know the whole story behind 2012.
Hollywood and 2012
Hollywood's latest blockbuster 2012 is about the imminent demise of the world. There are also websites, blogs, novels and songs trying to profit from the public's interest in the year 2012.
"The marketplace, the media, the mainstream media, is insisting that 2012 should be about doomsday or apocalypse," Maya scholar John Major Jenkins says.
The story behind the legend
In reality, he adds, the date has nothing to do with any of that. Jenkins directs the Center for 2012 Studies, a non-profit research group investigating Mayan timekeeping. In his new book, The 2012 Story, he explains what the year signifies in the Mayan calendar, which goes in cycles based on the moon, sun and other celestial bodies.
Maya scholar John Major Jenkins says the Mayan calendar was created 2100 years ago "The long count calendar of the Maya uses different cycles of periods based on 20 and I won't go into the mathematical details of it, but there is a large cycle in this calendar, it's referred to as '13 Baktun cycle' [and] it's 5125 years," he explains. "The calendar was created 2100 years ago, but the inventors of this calendar system projected backwards to a calculated or extrapolated beginning date of this cycle, which they associated with [their] creation mythology, that [modern] scholars have been able to identify as 3114 B.C. The end of this cycle then was projected forward to 2012 A.D."
Mayans were calculating movements in the galaxy
According to the Mayans, he says, the end of the cycle will coincide with a galactic alignment of the earth, the sun and the center of the galaxy.
"It has to do with a rare astronomical alignment - the slow shifting of the stars known as the Procession of the Equinoxes," he says. "This phenomenon is caused by the slow wobbling of the earth on its axis. One complete wobble takes 26,000 years. That's really the big news in terms of how impressive the ancient Maya science was."
Jenkins wrote in The Story Behind 2012 that there is no evidence the Maya thought the cycle would end in Doomsday However, Jenkins stresses, there is no evidence the Maya thought the cycle would end in Doomsday. That, he explains, is a modern notion.
"You know, the whole connection to this imagery of apocalypse or Armageddon can be traced specifically to an academic book, actually," he adds. "One might think that this idea got underway by popular writers or something like that, but actually, it was the great Maya scholar Michael Coe, archeologist, who in his 1966 book, The Maya, mentioned the upcoming cycle ending. It's actually the first time that the cycle ending was mentioned in print as well. He had made the calculation forward to the end of the cycle, and then also interpreted it through the filter of Christian Armageddon terminology."
Doomsday interpretation is relatively recent
That interpretation attracted a lot of popular attention.
"In the mid-1990s, there was a book called The Mayan Prophecies, that talked about how 2012 was supposed to be a time when more solar activity would be happening," he says. "The connection to other things, like invisible planets coming back into the solar system and all these ideas, really started to take off, and especially in the last five or six years, the whole Doomsday thing has really taken root," Jenkins says.
Talk about the end of the days, Jenkins notes, has been going on since the beginning of days.
"I think our own culture, Western civilization, the Judeo-Christian tradition, is steeped in a linear time philosophy that requires some kind of apocalyptic punch at the end of the process," he explains. "Even if you're not Jewish or Christian per se, one is still indoctrinated into this linear time. Also, we are beings who are born and will die. So we all have our own sort of apocalyptic end point, you might say the death process, which is a great mystery and it's probably the source of a lot of fear, whether it is conscious or unconscious, for a lot of people, in terms of their own mortality. So obviously, to utilize something like 2012 as a projection screen for these kinds of things is not that surprising," he says.

Super-Earths found orbiting nearby stars « Result #9 on Dec 15, 2009, 6:40pm »
Super-Earths found orbiting nearby stars Irene Klotz Discovery News
The race to find Earth-like planets around stars similar to our Sun progressed further with the announcement of up to six 'super-Earths' found orbiting sun-like neighbour stars. The smallest of the bunch weighs in at about five times the mass of Earth and orbits a star known as 61 Virginis, which is visible with the naked eye in the constellation Virgo. The star is 28 light-years from Earth and closely resembles the sun in size, age and other attributes. Two other newly detected planets - each about the size of Neptune - are part of 61 Virginis' family. Another planet that is 7.8 times larger than Earth orbits HD 1461, a sun-like star located 76 light-years away in the constellation Cetus. Two sibling planets may orbit this same star, though confirmation is still pending, says astronomer Dr Gregory Laughlin of the University of California's Lick Observatory. "I think this is really the tip of the iceberg," says Laughlin. "There's so many planets that have been detected now; it's completely clear that planets aren't rare. With our program, we've been focusing very intently on finding low-mass planets that orbit very nearby solar-type stars." An international team of researchers detected the new planetary systems by combining information collected during years of observations at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Anglo-Australian Telescope in Australia. Tiny tugs The astronomers combed the data looking for minute variations in the starlight caused by gravitational tugs of orbiting planets. "This was not the kind of 'ah-ha' moment where you look into the telescope and see the planet sitting there," says Laughlin. "The signal builds up over time." Refinements in planet-hunting techniques should make detection of Earth-sized planets possible in about a year, he says. "The practical limits for finding terrestrial planets around nearby stars is a lot more optimistic than what was thought to be the case a few years ago," Laughlin says. The newly discovered planets are too close to their parent stars for liquid water to exist on their surfaces, a condition that is believed to be necessary for life. Still, scientists say the discoveries, announced in this week's edition of The Astrophysical Journal, are paving the way toward finding the first true extraterrestrial Earth. "These planets are particularly exciting," says Professor Chris Tinney of the University of New South Wales. "It looks like there may be many Sun-like stars nearby with planets of that mass or less." Dr Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution agrees. "We are knocking on the door right now of being able to find habitable planets."

Naked footballer: 'I was chased by ghost' By Mayer Nissim
A footballer claimed to have been chased by a ghost when he was stopped by police running naked through the streets of Peru.
According to The Observer, Inti Gas Deportes midfielder Carlos 'Kukín' Flores admitted that he had been "engaging with dirty ladies" but had originally told his wife that he "was being chased by a ghost".
Flores said: "I didn't want my wife to be suspicious about ladies so I just told her it was a ghost. She failed to believe me."
He admitted to past "issues with cocaine" but claimed: "This was nothing like that. I just had a bad day."
